Misnomer Black Box

Misnomer Black Box

Posted on February 18 2019

Is an electronic flight recorder device with an in- and output of data with complex internal workings, placed in an aircraft for the purpose of facilitating the investigation of aviation accidents and incidents.
The term Black does not mean that the actual color of the recorders is black. They are bright orange and are intended to be spotted and recovered after incidents.
The black box is composed of two different boxes which are record devices each with different function. FDR and CVR are the two record devices.
Flight data recorder FDR records aircraft system and flight data. FDR captures 88 and more defined parameters. Its records instructions sent to any electronic systems on an aircraft.

FDR captured parameters are the position of control surfaces (flaps, elevator, rudder, ailerons), barometric data (altitude, airspeed, vertical speed), engine performance, G-loading, and many more.
The exterior of the FDR is coated with heat-resistant bright orange paint for high visibility in wreckage, and the unit is usually mounted in the aircraft’s tail section, where it is more likely to survive a severe crash.
While the CVR is the Cockpit Voice Recorder, a multi-track audio recorder that continuously captures every audible sound in the cockpit. It preserves the recent history of the sounds in the cockpit, including the conversation of the pilots, for the purpose of investigation of accidents and incidents.
The recorder’s CVR is usually located on the overhead instrument panel between the two pilots.

Sounds of interest to an investigator could be engine noise, stall warnings, landing gear extension and retraction. The CVR recordings are treated differently than the other information obtained in an accident investigation.Due to the highly sensitive nature of the verbal communications inside the cockpit, Congress has required that the Safety Board not release any part of aCVR audio recording.
